I have been working on a short biography speech for a class and chose to talk about Chris McCandless's pursuit for truth. I forgot how awesome he was until I researched for this paper and looking through his notes and pictures makes me want to just go explore nature. I get the same feeling after reading people like Thoreau and Emerson which, of course, were some of McCandless's biggest influences. I think Chris got so many things right, but sadly also got a few things wrong which ultimately shortened his life. Something I understand better after reading the book or watching the movie Into the Wild is the importance of experiencing the unconventional. It would be so boring if we were surrounded by monotony our entire lives. Chris went the extreme route, but it does not have to be like that. We can experience this unconventional living anywhere - going exploring without any sort of plan or expectations except to fully engage in the life constantly going on around us.
"The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin living" -W.M. Lewis
